Boobs Trump I.Q.

Need I explain the title?

I guess the answer to that is probably "yes."

Let me disclaim first.

This does not mean that you can get away with being stupid if you have large breasts, though many women, I'm sure, have been excused their intellectual magnitude for a magnitude of bosom, but this type of boobage trumping I.Q. is not actually what this blog is about.

No, this blog is about the fact that very smart men, sometimes even bona fide geniuses can still have their I.Q. and intelligence fully trumped by partially or fully exposed breasts. Come to think of it, a tight sweater alone sometimes does it.

What I mean by fully trumped is, I've witnessed men completely and totally loose their train of thought just by flashing a boob or two.

Now this is not something I do in public, at least nothing I've done in public yet, but more based on my private observations with a few very intelligent men I've known biblically.

This happened recently and it made me laugh. Marcus was on some rant about quantum or particle physics and the fabric of the universe or something along those lines, while I was honestly ready to wind down and be done with his grandiose proclamations for the night. Anyway, not sure I did this intentionally, but I happened to be disrobing at this moment, and he immediately lost his train of thought and gently lunged toward my now exposed breasts muttering "booo-biees" to himself like Gollum mutters "my precioussss..." in Lord of the Rings.

Now the side note is: Marcus's I.Q. was tested at 175 when he was a child, and while he's undoubtedly lost a few if not many I.Q. points since he was tested, he still is probably higher than the average bear, average being 85-115.

But on the particular night in question, it really cracked me up and made me realize, yet again, that while both sexes are currently relevant and necessary for survival of the species, women are still kind of the stronger sex. Sure, we may be more prone to mood swings than men, though I've met some moody men, and we bleed out of a primary orifice on a monthly basis, and we might get irrationally pissed off when the garbage hasn't been taken out or the dishes haven't been done, but still, it seems we have more ability to compartmentalize and still carry on a conversation even when a penis is flashed.

The counter equivalent to men getting wholly distracted by the flash of breasts would be women getting completely distracted by the sight of a penis. I admit, it would surprise me a bit if I were giving a talk on filmmaking, music, hypnosis or even physics (one of my favorite subjects in school), but ultimately I could still carry on a conversation quite easily were a bare penis present during my physics talk.

Some may argue it's because penises, as Seinfeld so aptly pointed out, belong to a male body which is largely a utilitarian sculpture. But when you think of it, breasts are utilitarian too - they are nature's perfect milk dispensary, deli or trough for babies.

So what's the thesis?

Maybe it's just this:

Ladies, if you want your guy to shut up, flash a boob or two.

Just know, you might get fondled at least, and ravished at most.

The sweaty t-shirt experiment

I heard about this study years ago, but was reminded recently by one of my hypnotherapy professors.

How fascinating. They've scientifically proven people choose mates based on scent and it's so deeply ingrained in our biology that we choose people who will (with us) create offspring with the highest probability of surviving and flourishing.

I don't think it works with deodorant or perfume, though most people know that those things don't truly mask a person's natural odor completely, so something in our olfactory system can probably smell through the cover-up.

Let me know what you think, and if you've experienced some olfactory arousal with your current or previous loves.

Sweaty T-Shirts and Human Mate Choice

Evolutionary psychology is a relatively new field. Scientists like Victor Johnston study the human brain and human behaviors -- why we do the things we do -- in the context of evolution. This clip outlines the "sweaty T-shirt" experiment, which showed that the sense of smell may have more to do with mate choice than previously thought. Females sniffing the T-shirts recently worn by males favored the scent of those whose immune response genes were different from their own. Meredith Small and Geoffrey Miller are also interviewed. Sweaty T-Shirts and Human Mate Choice:
Maybe it's not similar interests, horoscope signs, looks, or proximity that make women and men fall in love. According to evolutionary scientists, when people throw up their hands and say "it was just chemistry," they may be on to a fundamental factor in mate choice.

Subtle chemical signals, or pheromones, have long been known to draw pairs together within the same species, and for a specific reason. In mice, for example, experiments showed that pheromones acted as attractants between males and females who were genetically similar except that they differed in a certain type of immune system gene. That difference is actually a survival benefit: The combination of two individuals' different MHC (major histocompatibility locus) genes gives their offspring an advantage in beating back disease organisms.

So the mice could smell a genetic difference. But could modern humans, who aren't known for a particularly good sense of smell, also make that distinction?

In the first "sweaty T-shirt" experiment, a Swiss zoologist, Claus Wedekind, set up a test of women's sensitivity to male odors. He assembled volunteers, 49 women and 44 men selected for their variety of MHC gene types. He gave the men clean T-shirts to wear for two nights and then return to the scientists.

In the laboratory, the researchers put each T-shirt in a box equipped with a smelling hole and invited the women volunteers to come in, one at a time, and sniff the boxes. Their task was to sample the odor of seven boxes and describe each odor as to intensity, pleasantness, and sexiness.

The results were striking. Overall, the women preferred the scents of T-shirts worn by men whose MHC genes were different from their own.

The experiment did not test men's perceptions of female scents, but the results certainly suggest that evolution has provided humans, not just mice, with a transmitter and receiver for genetic information that could influence mate choice.

And all this even before the first date!

It's all about interpretation

The English language is funny for many reasons, but it also provides a lot of amusement when misinterpretations happen, as they inevitably will when a language has two words with vastly different meanings, but the exact same pronunciation, as in profit/prophet: The same as net income: total earnings less expenses; A person who speaks for god or a deity, or by divine inspiration.

I've found the greatest chasms between myself (a native English speaker) and the non-native speaker. Recently, a young Korean gentleman from my volleyball class told me he was going to New York. I asked if he was going to a Broadway show and he said what sounded to me like, Jes, we go to Oprah. Confused, I looked at him and said, Oprah? He said, more emphatically, Op-er-ah. I still didn't get it, so I said, I didn't know Oprah had a show in New York. I thought she was based in Chicago. Are they doing Oprah's life story on Broadway? He smiled and said, no, O-per-a. Oh. I laughed. Opera. Like Mozart. Italian. Opera. Ha. Love communicating with foreigners. It's always fun.

A slightly smaller, though no less significant chasm often happens between men and women. The other day, I asked Marcus to bring me a glass of magnesium citrate. For anyone who doesn't know what magnesium does, the short version is that natural-occurring magnesium in our bodies gets used up because of normal life, and especially because of stress and exercise (hence electrolyte replenishment is all the rage for athletes and is a staple in sports drinks and IV bags - just wish the sports drinks didn't have so much processed sugar and/or high-fructose corn syrup which are definitely not good for us). Magnesium also helps us calm down and very mildly helps us to sleep. Besides balancing our system - stress, exercise and sleep - magnesium citrate does one other very important thing. It helps us pooh more easily. Now I've been taking magnesium for several months now, and I definitely notice that it helps me to fall asleep, but I've noticed the biggest difference in my elimination. Besides eating a diet high in the healthy fats (which many experts say is more important than fiber for elimination), the magnesium definitely makes my number two-ing nice and easy... but not too easy. Nobody likes their number twos to be too easy am I right? (Do I really have to use the word diarrhea? Geesh. I guess I do. Nobody likes diarrhea. Well, nobody I know. Except maybe my friend Andy, and he doesn't so much like it as he likes to talk about anything involving bodily functions. No wonder he became a doctor. He nicknamed is old, brown, beat-up jeep number 3. Think about it. He had to explain it to most people. Number 3 is the combination of number 1 & number 2. Ewe, Andy.)

But back to the story.

On the night in question, I was already comfortably in bed, so I asked Marcus to bring me a glass of magnesium. I told him to just put one tablespoon of the powder in the glass with water. He said ok.

He comes back with my magnesium, and if I were smarter in that moment, I only would've downed half of that glass because it tasted stronger than usual (it has a relatively pleasant citrus taste). The next day I probably should have proposed to the toilet I was on it so much. I scolded Marcus and vowed never to let him get my magnesium for me ever again. Then I inquired, did you use the tablespoon? He said yes, of course. I said, the WHITE tablespoon, you know the one for baking? He said, No, I used a regular big spoon. That's a tablespoon, right? I did a very long and obvious eye-roll, then said, honnney (guys, you know how this honey sounds and it's one-third term-of-endearment, two-thirds pejorative) you're supposed to use the white, more exact tablespoon, not the large, eating spoons! What did you think that just because it was ON THE TABLE that it counted as a TABLEspoon!?!"

At this point we both started laughing, though I was the only one holding my stomach.

My body recovered within 24 hours and I've been solely responsible for prepping my nightly magnesium, but I thought this was so perfect an illustration of how interpretation factors in during even the most simple of every day interactions. So often we believe the other person knows what we are talking about, but so much in life, our interactions, observations, and even our inner commentary on the world, is all about interpretation

It's a good argument for taking everything less seriously.

But please, and this really is important, remember to use the proper tablespoon.

By the way, our favorite, most bio-available, easily absorbed, and fortunately reasonably priced magnesium citrate is Natural Calm by Peter Gillham's Natural Vitality. Get the plain/original/natural flavor via the link. The flavored ones might add a little sweetener which is unnecessary and not as healthy as the plain.)

The male member revealed

Last night I witnessed feats beyond the human imagination...

At least, beyond most female imaginations.

You see, ever since puberty I’ve heard comments from my guy friends and boyfriends about what they imagine women do when we’re alone together.

But I’ve never really heard women fantasize about what men do when they’re alone together. And according to a survey, women are 10 times less likely to fantasize about what men do together when there are no female witnesses around, than men are to fantasize about what women do together when there are no males around... At least according to the survey I did among my friends.

You see, what I’m referring to is Puppetry of the Penis. A show you’ve probably heard of and is exactly what it sounds like. Making puppets, or different shapes and objects out of a relaxed penis. (It's two male performers who have different names for the shapes and manipulations they put their poor members through.)

It was interesting, horrifying, amusing, and squeal-inducing. (I swear the audience of 80% women must’ve squealed about 22 times during the 45-minute show.)

But I left feeling like I’d seen enough penis for a while. Not only did I not want sex that night when I got home, but I wondered if the puppets might’ve created an aversion to all things phalic. Fortunately, I’ve recovered (as my birthday penis origami show was over a week ago now, even though I started writing this the next day), but I wonder how men would respond to vaginal origami. I’m not sure as much manipulation would be possible, since there’s less external material to deal with, but I wonder if it would completely turn men off. Or maybe men wouldn’t care.

No. They probably would. Most men I know get all squirmy at the mere mention of any nether-region itchy-ness, yeast, urinary tract infections... Forget about mentioning menstruation...they’d fumble their burger if you brought it up at lunch (I suppose the side of ketchup doesn’t help – ewww, right?). I’m lucky. My beau doesn’t get all squirrelly but he helps people with health, nutrition, weight, fitness and digestion, so he’s desensitized. But maybe he’s good at his work because he naturally doesn’t mind talking about these things. Yeah, it’s probably the latter. He actually likes talking about pooping with his clients because it’s so indicative of a person’s health and digestion.

As much as I had fun with my girlfriends on our adventure into penis-origami-world, I think once-in-a-lifetime is enough for witnessing the puppetry of the penis. Though the two stars of the show (the guys, not their wankers), were impressive in their boldness, flexibility (now we’re talking about their members), sense of humor and willingness to bare-it-all.

Well done boys and your side-kicks. But I probably won’t return for an encore performance.
